An American in Paris (Dominion Theatre)

So it's been more than a while since I last posted, as you can probably tell by now I'm the biggest procrastinator arguably in the world. But, I'm back and since last time I have been to a few more theatre shows over the past few months.

So this post is about An American in Paris, a post World War 2 musical theatre production, taking place in 1945. It is about the rebuilding in Paris on the aftermath of what the war had left and finding hope after the destruction, as seen from the stage settings; mostly dark and dusk like in contrast to the characters and the acts which I think works really well as the focus is on the characters only and is hard to keep your eyes away from them.

The acting is depicted through the expression of ballet and it is mind blowing how much talent and hard work the characters have, however they make it look effortless.

An American In Paris has it all: music, the on point dancing, not to mention the famous songs are easily recognisable with numbers such as I got Rhythm, played effortlessly by live orchestra. An American in Paris follows is set post wartime, where an unlikely friendship between two Americans and a Frenchman becomes difficult when they all fall in love with the same woman, Lise Dassin, a beautiful French dancer. The breathtaking beauty of each individual dancer, and their connection with each other stood out throughout. The most memorable dance, a duet between lovers Lise and Jerry Mulligan is stunning and captures the ‘City of Light’ at its best.

The male friends although in a love triangle have an exceptional bond between them, each with their own ambitions: to create music, on to become a painter and one to make his parents proud of him. Each character develops into the true version of themselves, discovering what they really want, living their dreams through Paris’ charm.
Overall, this brilliant musical is amazing and a must-see!
